Since 2004, Schonfield Consulting has worked with a wide array of clients on evaluation, strategy, program development, grant-making, fundraising and other services.

Grant-making Support

Since 2006, Schonfield Consulting has assisted the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Development Program with evaluation of grant applications and due-diligence. We've helped Program Officers analyze 50+ proposals ($1 million to $30 million grants), developed grant recommendations and worked with potential grantees to refine proposals to meet foundation requirements.

We assisted senior staff at the Starbucks Foundation to develop and implement a $4.5 million grant making program to support coffee-growing communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America.  Schonfield Consulting developed a 2014 "Origin Grants Plan", identified NGOs to invite for the RFP, designed proposal guidelines and assisted staff to make funding recommendations to the Foundation Board.

Program Evaluation

Our team has extensive experience conducting evaluations for a wide range of philanthropic and non-profit organizations. Our most recent work includes:

We're currently conducting an evaluation of the Kenneth Rainin Foundation's Health Program, a $2 million initiative that supports bio-medical research. Schonfield Consulting is using qualitative and quantitative methods (grantee reports, on-line survey, phone/in-person interviews, publication metrics) to understand the effectiveness of this program and to strengthen implementation.

For the Fresno Regional Foundation, we conducted an evaluation of the impact of California's drought on community based organizations (CBOs),  with data collection through a survey of Central Valley CBOs, key stakeholder interviews, and meetings with over 60 community leaders. See the final report here

We prepared a detailed case study for the City Fields Foundation, a successful public-private partnership to revitalize athletic fields in San Francisco. The evaluation -- analyzing accomplishments, challenges and lessons learned -- was distributed to funders, city leaders and other stakeholders.

Strategy Development

Schonfield Consulting prepared internal strategy documents for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Development Program to improve program effectiveness.  We prepared strategic direction reports for teams in advocacy and international emergency relief, a case study on "spillover effects" from grants in East Africa and India, and helped develop a $44 million grant-making program to strengthen education in developing countries

In 2015, we helped the Natural Resources Defense Council develop a 5-year Strategic Plan for NRDC’s India Initiative, including goals, strategies and next steps in programs, operations, international partners and organizational support.  Schonfield Consulting led NRDC staff, leadership, Board and India partners through a strategic development process with “visioning” sessions, interviews and planning workshops.

Fundraising and Foundation Outreach

In 2016, Schonfield Consulting helped the OASIS Initiative (Univ. of CA initiative working in the Sahel) to develop and implement a fundraising strategy.  We identified “best fit” foundations, advised on foundation outreach, and developed a major donor cultivation strategy, resulting in a $750,000 gift from an individual donor.

We assisted the Trans-African Hydro Meteorological Observatory with fundraising and business planning, including development of a $2+ million proposal to USAID for a network of real-time weather monitoring stations in East Africa.  USAID selected this proposal as a finalist in the "Securing Water for Food" initiative.

For the Community Alliance with Family Farmerswe planned, organized and co-wrote two successful multi-million dollar funding proposals to the California Water Resources Board, supporting ecological tree-crop farming ($900,000) and sustainable cotton production ($792,000)
