Grantmaking Support

Since 2006, Schonfield Consulting has assisted the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Development Program with evaluation of grant applications and due-diligence. We've helped Program Officers analyze 50+ proposals ($1 million to $30 million grants), assisted with the development of a $44 million grant-making program in 2007 to strengthen education in developing countries, and worked with potential grantees to refine proposals to meet foundation requirements.

We assisted senior staff at the Starbucks Foundation to develop and implement a $4 million grant making program to support coffee-growing communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America.  Schonfield Consulting developed an "Origins Community Grants Plan", identified NGOs to invite for the RFP, designed proposal guidelines and assisted staff to make funding recommendations to the Foundation Board.

Strategy Development

Schonfield Consulting is supporting the Well Being Trust, a new national foundation promoting mental health and well-being.  This start up foundation – based in Oakland CA with $100+ million endowment– hired Schonfield Consulting to help with strategy, hiring staff, establishing initial grants and contracts, donor development, CEO support and other foundations operations.

Schonfield Consulting prepared internal strategy documents for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Development Program to improve program effectiveness.  We prepared strategic direction reports for teams in advocacy and international emergency relief, wrote a case study on "spillover effects" from grants in East Africa and India, and developed a Learning Inventory Database of 80+ agricultural investments (ranging from $1 million to $25+ million) to support knowledge management and centralize key learnings.

Program Evaluation

Schonfield Consulting conducted an evaluation of the Kenneth Rainin Foundation's Health Program, a $2 million initiative that supports bio-medical research. Using qualitative and quantitative methods (grantee reports, on-line survey, phone/in-person interviews, publication metrics), Schonfield Consulting helped this foundation better understand its effectiveness and strengthen implementation.

For the Central Valley Community Foundation, we conducted an evaluation of the impact of California's drought on community based organizations (CBOs),  with data collection through a survey of Central Valley CBOs, key stakeholder interviews, and meetings with over 60 community leaders. See the final report here

We prepared a detailed case study for the City Fields Foundation, a successful public-private partnership to revitalize athletic fields in San Francisco. The evaluation -- analyzing accomplishments, challenges and lessons learned -- was distributed to funders, city leaders and other stakeholders.

"Thanks for the excellent job on the case studies. I presented your work at the convening and it garnered a lot of attention. I’m excited to see how things move forward!"

Richard Caldwell, Senior Program Officer, Gates Foundation

"It was a pleasure working with Schonfield Consulting on our health program evaluation. Anne was super thoughtful and organized, and helped us translate lots of data into a very useful product for our Board."
